The Hottest Fitness Trends in LA

One need not look further than the packed path on Runyon Canyon to know that LA is serious about fitness. Los Angeles is home to some of the best (and most well-known) fitness studios and gyms in the country. It's no wonder that Los Angeles easily made it into the top ten strongest wellness marketplaces in our MINDBODY Wellness Index

We took a look at what makes LA a fitness haven and what workouts its trendsetters are looking to try next.

Angelenos make fitness a priority

Thirty-four percent of LA residents say they prioritize their workouts. Only 28% of Americans, on average, say the same. This prioritization means more time at the studio or gym. More Angelenos exercise at least once a week (78%) than Americans do on average (70%). With such high demand for sweat sessions, there are a lot of classes to choose from in LA. Eighteen to 25 year-olds in Los Angeles spend more on fitness (and wellness) than 18-25 year-olds in every other metro area. This group even outspends the notoriously high spenders in New York. Their investments are paying off, though; out of the three age groups in LA, 18-25 year-olds are the most satisfied with their overall fitness level.

The most popular exercises in Los Angeles

The City of Angels loves group workout classes—more so than the rest of the US. In fact, more than a third of Angelenos attend group workout classes at least once a week. 

Here's how they're exercising today: 

  • Yoga (22%)
  • Dance (17%)
  • Zumba®/dance fitness (17%)
  • Weight/strength training (15%)
  • Aerobics (13%)

The classes Los Angeles wants to try next

Never a city to miss out on the latest trend, it's no surprise its residents want to try new forms of fitness, too. Here are the top workouts each age group is looking to try next: 

18-25 year-olds want to try: 

  • Kickboxing (25%)
  • Boot camp (20%)
  • Aerobics (18%)
  • Dance (15%)
  • Gentle martial arts (15%)

26-45 year-olds want to try:

  • Kickboxing (19%)
  • Boot camp (16%)
  • CrossFit® (15%)
  • Gentle martial arts (15%)
  • Martial arts (15%)

46-65 year-olds want to try:

  • Zumba®/dance fitness (14%)
  • Aerobics (13%)
  • Pilates (11%)
  • Weight/strength training (11%)
  • Yoga (11%) 

More workouts, less stress

Out of the top 50 metro areas in the US, Los Angeles is the least stressed. Unsurprisingly, two of the top reasons residents say they exercise are to reduce stress and feel better mentally. They also want to feel good, lose or gain weight, and live long and healthy lives.

Working out might help LA sleep better at night, too. While only 47% of Americans say they get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, 55% of Los Angeles residents say the same.

Working out is, well, working out for this city. Next class, here we come!
